This is something a very dear friend wrote me:
I had a philosophical question, but didn’t want to get “all religious” on you. Anyway, it was about the two details you talked about that changed your travel plans and how you attributed those things to God’s timeline for you. I guess that’s were I always have questions, because I don’t know how some people see altered plans (things not working out or changing) as something other than just coincidence or a matter of timing, rather than some larger plan. I don’t know, I guess I just want God AND our personal choices to work together….something that says PEOPLE are responsible for what happens in their lives as much as a higher force is. I wonder (when people attribute things that happen to a higher force at work) if it makes it too easy to just say, “Well, it’s out of my hands; it’s what He had planned for me,” rather than, “This happened for whatever reason and this is how I chose to handle it.” Am I making any sense? Is there not room for BOTH people affecting the course of their lives and God? But then, that leaves us never really knowing if what happens to us is just chance or fate. Is it really possible to know? I guess your comments got me thinking about issues I’ve had problems with….
