LSOF: Gain your soul, lose this world

LSOF: Gain your soul…lose the world

One thing that has been on my heart lately, is poverty; spiritual and worldly.

In the video I showed earlier today, “ Lose My Soul” by Toby Mac. The key verse to the song was,
“ I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul.”

But what if these were the lyrics,
“ I want to gain my soul, and lose this world.”

We could spend all day talking about how much materialism can destroy us, but something that I don’t hear in the message, is the “ HOW” to avoid it. The “ How” to put the focus on what’s spiritually important.

You’ve heard me quote this before, but it was a quote from friend that I keep close to me, and I have learned to have emphasis in believing over the years,
“ When Jesus is all you have, Jesus is all you need.”

It seems to me that we sometimes focus on all the things we’re not doing enough to strengthen our relationship with God, that we don’t pay attention to the things we do!

I want to go back and talk about a couple comments left on the blog from my
post for Mandy’s DO SOMETHING“ Do-ing something: Beyond the surface of Kindness.”

Tammy- GreatfulinGA left this comment:

“There is such an incredible difference between surface kindness and from the gut. That probably explains our readiness to buy into the less is more/enough lie from the pits of hell itself!”

To me her comment meant its is the difference between being hot and lukewarm.

And I liked Melissa1970 comment as well,

“ So true that we need to offer more depth and substance at times, in our acts of service to the Lord. But I also do feel that it’s not necessarily easy to do the list of things you suggest are easy. Maybe the person delivering a meal doesn’t have the money and has sacrificed to do so. maybe serving with the church at a project one day required taking a day off work and paying a babysitter. I do believe there can be more selflessness in those acts than is suggested here…..but bottom line is…..we often avoid what makes us uncomfortable, and I’m quite sure Jesus was ridiculously uncomfortable on the cross, and for that we need to allow ourselves some sacrificial stretching.”
What her comment here said to me what that sacrifice, in even the littlest bit can make a difference.

The times I focused on what I wasn’t doing enough in my spiritual walk those were the times where I became spiritually poor.

If you discourage yourself in your spiritual walk, you will discourage your spiritual walk, for yourself.

Of course I don’t mean to stand in a spiritual comfort zone, That is NOT what I mean at all!

I want us to understand that God doesn’t need fireworks to happen in our faith,
He just encourages the flame, to stay lit.

So if you are at a place right now where you find yourself in the breach of spiritual poverty,
I have this to say:

Start fresh. Tomorrow morning remember to wake up and thank God for the brand new day, and then go from there.

Quit constantly comparing your old self with the new. It is a guarantee the old, will win everytime!

Start small. Focus on somethings you enjoy doing, that come easy at the moment for you;

Gifts and talents you have, little hobbies you do that can be used to glorify God and keep the focus from yourself, and how good or not good you are at it.

Focus on now what you used to do. Its GONE!

Focus on the right now- THE BRAND NEW DAY!

Something that just entered my mind as I have been writing this that can lead us into spiritual poverty,
Is comparing ourselves with others.

Okay, so you’re not Beth Moore, or another writer; You can’t sing as well as CeCe Winans, or you don’t think you could ever be as good as a missionary of Mother Theresa, or evangelist like Billy Graham…

Did you ever realize that you were wrong? That YOU ARE as good as them, because it has nothing to do with them, but the power inside them?
Did you ever stop to realize you had it too?
His name is JESUS
If you don’t know Him, leave an anonymous comment, and I’ll be glad to share

So folks, I leave you with this thought today:

Which would you rather focus on more?

“ I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul” or “ I want to gain my soul and lose this world?”

Mark 12:41-43

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.

Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

Okay everyone think on this…and blog lurkers, it be a good time for you to shine today too:)

Be Blessed:)

  1. Ang I never stop by here that your post don’t kick me in the hiney, and I thank you for that.

“it has nothing to do with them, but the power inside them?”

I just pray to be reminded of this, over and over….this is where ALL the power lies. To God be praised!!

    love your sweet soul!

  2. Tammy: GIRL…this post was beat out of me, I am for real. I was just writing in my little prayer journal, when it came like a tidal wave…and 2 hrs later…there it was!

I love when God throws things at me like that, but not always so great when you have to get ready for work too! BUT I DO LOVE that He definitely keeps me from getting comfortable:)

I am glad this blessed you:) Love ya girl!

  3. this is a very interesting post…

    i love that song…

it came out when i was really struggling with going to nursing school. i wanted to go for several reasons … one of them being $$$$ but it would of taken precious time form my children.

i lkke what you wrote about it not having anything to do with them but the power in them.

each of us ARE significant to Jesus and I think it will be interesting to see the crowns in heaven that the “widows” are able to give back to Jesus.

  4. Natalie: I am glad you were touched by it. And yes, I also know its hard to remind ourselves that we can do anything because of Jesus inside us, but we CAN, and I can’t wait to see all the amazing things in heaven:)
    Be Blessed:)
